It started to rain while replacing our roof and now there is water damage in our house will insurance cover it?

char s asked:

We got the house sheeted and then tarped before it started to rain. BUT now it wont stop raining and we have had 2 ceilings fall down and numerous leaks. Do we have a chance at turning this in to our insurance company?

You can talk to them. Since the damage was indirectly of your doing, they may not. Give your agent a call, since he/she would be much more familiar with your policy than anyone here would be. Good luck.

Oh you poor thing!! There is a special coverage that you can take out when doing repairs to the house. I don’t think your normal coverage will take care of the damage. Best bet is to call your insurance company ASAP.

You should call your agent immediatley, they will give you the number for someone to come tarp it off again so that you won’t have further losses. They should cover it on you homeowners policy.

If you are doing it with an roofing company it is there responsibility to protect your home while they are replacing your roof. It should go to their insurance company. If you are doing it yourself. You are about to see how good your insurance company is. When there is a problem is when you know the character of the company. My feeling is it was an act of god. You did not know the rain was coming. If you did your due diligence to protect your home and the storm blew the protection off it may be covered by your insurance company.

Have you done anything to mitigate the damage? The insurance will want to see you try to dry the structure. Protect the home by reinforcing the tarping.
You have a responsibility to keep the damage to a minimum.
Good Lucas
